One of the first questions couples ask when they start planning is:
“How much should we actually be spending on each vendor?”
And while the honest answer is it depends on your priorities, there are some very helpful guidelines that can keep your budget feeling sustainable instead of stressful.
Today we’re talking about the “big three” wedding vendors and how much of your overall budget they should generally take up:
From there, everything else gets shaped around what matters most to you.
Your venue sets the tone for the day, but it’s also the place where budgets can spiral pretty quick.
As a general rule, your venue should not exceed 30% of your total wedding budget if you want breathing room for everything else.
Why this matters so much:
If your venue includes catering, rentals, and staffing, you might be able to stretch closer to 40–50%, but this is where couples often get stuck. When too much of the budget goes to the venue alone, there’s very little left to support the rest of your priorities.
A stunning venue without décor, florals, lighting, or music won’t deliver the experience you’re imagining.
This is why planners look at what’s included, not just the base rental fee.
Photography is not the place to hunt for the cheapest option.
Your photos are one of the only things that last long after the wedding day, and the right photographer is about far more than a number on a spreadsheet.
Most couples spend 10–15% of their total budget on photography, but the real focus should be:
Every photographer brings a different perspective and style. Pricing reflects experience, consistency, and the ability to handle unpredictable wedding days calmly and confidently.
If you love their work, you’re far more likely to love your photos.
Wedding planning is not just logistics, it’s decision-making, advocacy, and problem-solving.
A planner’s role often touches every single part of your wedding, which is why choosing one based solely on price can end up costing you more in the long run.
Most couples spend 10–15% of their budget on planning support, depending on the level of service.
When choosing a planner, ask yourself:
A good planner helps you:
This is where customization really begins.
This is where priorities come into play.
Some couples care deeply about:
Others are happy to keep those elements simpler.
There is no one-size-fits-all budget breakdown, and that’s exactly why working with a planner is so valuable. We help you shift money toward what matters most to you, while keeping the overall budget realistic.
A sustainable wedding budget usually looks something like this:
From there, everything else flexes based on your priorities, not someone else’s checklist.
A wedding budget isn’t about cutting corners, it’s about making intentional choices that support the experience you want to create.
And that’s where thoughtful planning makes all the difference.
